Remove EXIF data and photo metadata

See what your photo reveals, then remove it. Everything happens on your device: your photo is never uploaded.

How to remove photo metadata in three steps

  1. Choose your photo. It opens on your device, and nothing is uploaded.
  2. Review what was found. You see its location, device, date and any personal details, plus any Content Credentials or AI markers.
  3. Clean it. Remove everything, or only the location, then download the new copy. The tool reads the new file back and checks it.

What photo metadata can reveal

Kind of detailWhat it can reveal
Location (GPS)Where the photo was taken, often to within a few metres. This can point to your home, your workplace or a child’s school.
Date and timeWhen the photo was taken or changed.
DeviceThe make and model of your phone or camera, the lens and the software on it.
Personal detailsNames, captions, comments and serial numbers that can identify a person or one particular device.
AI and originWhether the photo carries Content Credentials (C2PA) or says it was made or edited with AI, and which tool was used.
Camera settingsExposure, aperture, ISO and focal length. Harmless on their own.

The full explanation is in what is EXIF data.

Remove everything, or only the location?

Remove all metadata strips the location, device, date, personal details, previews, Content Credentials and extra blocks, and also drops anything attached after the picture, such as the short video of a motion photo. Use this before you send an original photo to someone you do not know well.

Remove location only blanks the GPS data and the caption and editing blocks (XMP and IPTC) that can hold place names, and leaves the rest as it was. Use it when you are happy to share the camera details and the date.

What stays the same

  • The picture. JPEG files are not compressed again, so quality does not change.
  • The orientation, so the photo is not turned sideways.
  • The colour profile, which describes how colours should look, not who took the photo.

Which files work

JPEG, PNG and WebP. Most Android phones save photos as JPEG. Other types, such as HEIC, GIF and TIFF, are not supported yet.

Your photos stay on your device

This page reads your photo into your browser’s memory, removes the hidden blocks there and hands you a new file to download. There is no upload, no account and no waiting for a server. The page’s security rules also forbid it from making network requests while it runs.

What removing metadata does not hide

The picture itself still shows what it shows: faces, street signs, reflections and recognisable views. The words you write when you share a photo, and the file name, can also give things away. Metadata is the easiest clue to remove completely, but it is not the only one.

Questions

Is it safe to use my photos here?

Your photos are opened and cleaned on your own device, inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the page is set up so that it cannot send your files anywhere.

Does removing metadata reduce the quality of the photo?

No. For JPEG files the picture data is not touched or compressed again: the file is simply cut and put back together without the hidden blocks. The photo looks exactly the same.

What is EXIF data?

It is information that a phone or camera stores inside a photo file: when it was taken, on which device, and sometimes where. What is EXIF data explains it in detail.

Will my photo still be the right way up?

Yes. When a photo depends on its orientation tag to be shown upright, the tool keeps that one small piece of information and removes everything else.

Why is the cleaned file smaller?

Because the hidden data is gone. Photos can also contain a small preview copy of the picture, and large editing or caption blocks, and those are removed as well.

Does it work on an Android phone?

Yes, in any current phone browser. How to remove location from photos on Android has the steps, including how to stop new photos saving your location.
